EarthOur first tenant of Aerospace, Defense and Technology Business & Research Park is slated to be Worldview Experience. Located South of Tucson International Airport it will be a welcome addition to the Sonoran Corridor.

Headed by CEO Jane Poynter, this high altitude space balloon technology has been used to develop and fly devices for communications, weather, surveillance and research.  The balloons can be used as orbiting satellites or hovering above a single location for a designated time period. Offering access to near space opens up opportunities for research and educational pursuits and the market for these services is extensive.

The campus will include manufacturing facilities, a spacecraft bay and will be adjacent to the state’s first designated Launchpad for commercial space endeavors, built by Pima County and named Spaceport Tucson. World View Enterprises aims to start launching paying customers to the stratosphere in 2017 beneath a giant balloon, for $75,000 per seat. Passengers will spend two hours at an altitude of 100,000 feet (30,500 meters), where they’ll be able to see the blackness of space and the curvature of Earth.

Ms. Poynter was a founding member of the Biosphere 2 Design, Development, Test and Operations Team and actually lived in the Biosphere as part of its first 2yr. mission. In 2009, she was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year by the National Association for Female Executives. She is also a co-founder of Paragon Space Development Corp and holds the patent for Paragon’s Autonomous Biological Shuttle, a long duration plant and aquatic animal life support system which flew on the U.S. Space Shuttle, the International Space Station and the Russian Mir Space Station. Her talents will help make the Tucson project a viable part of our community.

Those of us involved with Tucson’s housing market are excited about this new venture. It will add over 400 new employees and studies projecting a $3.5 billion economic impact over 20 years. If home prices are to continue to rise, we need more folks moving to our city. This will be a great opportunity to bring them here. Maybe we’ll even get to see a balloons being launched into space. So start saving your pennies now and perhaps you’ll have enough for a ride into near space in the not-too-distant future!    Space Balloon
