Where to Eat in Vail, AZ?
This article authored by: Rob Hallberg
One complaint I hear about the Vail area is the lack of stores and restaurants. Vail has one main shopping center on Colossal Cave Road in “downtown” Vail. There is also a “planned” Shopping Center at the corner of Colossal Cave and Mary Anne Cleveland which has not materialized.
Of course, I am often asked, “When is the Shopping Center going to be built?” One store was built across the street from the planned Center, a Walgreens (which always seems very busy), but there is no activity on the large cleared area. There is a sign promising a 2009 opening of a Safeway, but obviously that date is long past.
I would not hold my breath waiting for the Shopping Center to be built. I called some sources I have and they are not aware of any plans to start building. Safeway recently went through a large merger, which may also delay its construction.
So where can a Vail resident eat out without going to Tucson? Here is a list in alphabetical order:
Argenziano’s: A Family Italian Restaurant located in South Vail near the intersection of Sahuarita & Houghton Road. Often a line on Friday’s and Saturdays. They sell quite a few pizzas to go but there is no delivery. 762-5999
Arizona Pizza Company: Their name says it all, their specialty is Pizza. Located in the Vail Center, they also offer a few subs and chicken wings. 762-5500
Dairy Queen: They serve more than ice cream. Located in the Vail Center, they have recently expanded their menu to include Chicken Strips, Burgers and more. Small seating areas indoors and outdoors. 762-0343
Hacienda Del Lago: Continental/American Food located in the Rancho Del Lago Clubhouse. Dinner specials available most days. 647-3109
Montgomerys’ Grill & Saloon: This Bar/Restaurant is located in the Vail Center and serves “Bar Food” (Sandwiches & Burgers) and has a selection of entrees. 762-0081
Nico’s Taco Shop: Mexican Fast-Food, located across from the Vail Center. Small seating areas indoors and outdoors. 762-8888
Quiznos: A National chain specializing in Soup and Sandwiches located in the Vail Center. 762-0088
Vail Steakhouse Café & Diner: Casual, Family Dining, comfort food. Located on the I-10 access road South of Colossal Cave, this large facility also has an active Bar attached to it. 762-8777
Although these restaurants do not have a Vail address, Vail residents frequent them:
Hot Rod’s: This Bar/Restaurant is located off of Houghton Road, South of Mary Ann Cleveland. Famous for dining while watching cars being built in their custom shop. Serves primarily “Bar Food” (Sandwiches & Burgers) but also has a selection of entrees. 202-0987
Rancho Rustico: A Family Mexican Restaurant located on the West side of Houghton Road just South of Rita Road. Open for Breakfast on Weekends. 574-2294
Gary Ray’s Texas BBQ: Formerly a Steakhouse, this restaurant now specializes in smoked meats, particularly Pork, Chicken or Beef Ribs and is located off of Old Spanish Trail, North of Rocking K Ranch. Lots of seating. 885-4600
Continental/American: Hacienda Del Lago. Worth checking out.
Italian: Argenziano’s. Large portions.
Mexican: Rancho Rustico. One of the best in Tucson.
Pizza: Arizona Pizza Company. Hard to beat for Pizza.
Sandwiches: Quizno’s & Montgomery’s are both good but different. Hard to choose.
By supporting these restaurants, you are insuring their continuing service and will help attract new restaurants and store!
