UA Tech Park : Helping Vail, AZ Prosper
This article authored by: Catherine Hallberg
As one of the backbones of the Vail, AZ community, the UA Tech Park, located at 7762 E. Science Park Drive, houses 40 companies with a total of approximately 6,500 employees including such notables as IBM and Raytheon.
The Vail Academy and High School resides there and Tech Parks Arizona has worked with the district to provide opportunities for students to gain knowledge and learning experiences from professionals who work on-site. In addition, internships and workshops have been created for students from other districts such as Sunnyside to enhance their learning experience.
Working closely with the Rita Ranch Neighborhood Association and the Greater Vail Community, the Tech Park is committed to helping the community grow by creating jobs, supporting community organizations and hosting events.
Another way the Tech Park helps the Vail community is by holding regular blood drives sponsored by the American Red Cross as well ARC sponsored classes in CPR and first aid which are offered on campus.
One of the most exciting recent projects is the planned construction of a YMCA and Pima County Branch Library. With about 4500 people living within a mile of the park and an estimated 300,000 within a 5 mile radius, there are plenty of folks to support the facilities.
Sixteen acres of Tech Park land has been approved by The AZ Board of Regents to be used for the project, although construction of the 15,000sf library is waiting on funding by the Pima County Bond election to be held November 2015. The YMCA is committed to the project and hopes to raise $6.5 million from private and corporate sources but would need an additional$6,000,000 from the PIMA County Bond election to make their facility full service with sports, aquatics, childcare and health and wellness programs. Without the bond funds, the project will proceed, but on a much smaller scale. Charlie Buchanan, the Associate Executive Director of the Ott YMCA will assume the position of Executive Director of the new facility. He’s very excited about the project and is moving ahead with the design phase which is projected to be completed by the end of next year.
When finished, the YMCA should be able to support itself through membership and participation by the surrounding Vail community and require no further outside funding.
To grow and prosper, Vail,AZ needs facilities such as the UA Tech Park which provide invaluable services and opportunities for adults and teens to realize their dreams and aspirations. We must lend our support to make sure these new programs come to fruition and utilize them so that they continue to thrive.
