The Sun Link is Up & Running!

This weekend Rob & I took a ride on the new Tucson Sunlink Streetcar which runs from the Mercado area to the University of Arizona. It has been in the works since it was approved by Pima County in 2006. The Sun Link streetcars, manufactured by Oregon Iron Works/United Streetcar, are among the first batch “Made in America” streetcar vehicles in 60 years. Eight all-electric, state-of-the-art streetcars reside at the Operations & Maintenance Facility at 290 E.8th Street.
Each car holds up to 148 passengers and can also accommodate bicycles and wheelchairs. There are 19 stops with the route forking at Broadway heading East and Congress traveling West.
Tickets may be purchased online or from vending machines at each stop. You can use cash or credit. Day passes run $4.00 per person and a monthly pass is available for $42. When you board, just swipe your card on the machine and it registers your fare. Yes, they do have spot checkers for those of you thinking of “beating the system”.
We found the ride to be smooth and stops well-marked. We were able to make the whole trip from the Mercado to the last U of A stop in around 30 minutes. That will probably vary by time of day and traffic, but Sundays it’s a snap.
You can get off around 4th Avenue to peruse the shops or downtown by the Courthouse for those of you on jury duty. There’s also a stop at Maingate Square and 3 stops for the University.
When we got to the end of the line, we stayed onboard and the driver simply walked to the other end of the streetcar to make the return trip. No reverse!
Rob and I stopped at the Downtown Kitchen for dinner, then got back on and picked up our car at the Mercado. It was a fun afternoon and I think the streetcar will be a great addition to the development of downtown Tucson.
