Marana was first inhabited by the Hohokam Indians until 1690 with the arrival of the Spanish and Apache Indians. In the early 1900’s, the Silverbell Copper Mine and Ranching contributed to most of the growth in Marana but the end of World War I brought large Cotton farms to the area. More farms were added during WW II fulfilling the rising demand for wheat, barley, alfalfa and pecan orchards.
Marana’s growth led to their incorporation in 1977 and the city slowly started a transformation from a primarily agricultural community to one with a large residential base. Continental Ranch, a large, Master Planned Community was opened in the mid-90’s and the upscale community of Dove Mountain added in the late 90’s to early 2000’s.
