The Gaslight Theatre

Whether you’ve just moved to Tucson or are a long-time resident, a night at the Gaslight Theatre is something you won’t want to miss!
Entering their 35th year of operation, the Gaslight Theatre appeals to people from all ages and backgrounds. Surprisingly it originated in Skagway, Alaska in 1977 as the brainchild of a U of A student named Tony Terry Jr. and a few of his drama department buddies. These desert rats only lasted one summer up North before pulling up stakes and heading back to Tucson.
Our Gaslight began in an old red barn at Trail Dust Town on Tanque Verde Road. In 1980 it outgrew the barn and moved to the corner of Sabino Canyon and Tanque Verde Road. At this point, there were 223 seats.
Ten years later, it was time to move again. This time they purchased the old Jerry Lewis Theatre at the corner of Broadway and Kolb where the Gaslight Theatre resides today. They also built Little Anthony’s Diner which resembles an old time diner and serves the cuisine to go with it.
Tom Benson, one of the founding partners, still serves as scenic designer and many of the staff and performers have remained loyal. Pianist and Musical Director Linda Ackermann has over 66 productions under her belt and holds a Masters in Music from the U of A. She plays several other instruments as well.
The plays are entertainingly corny with pratfalls, fanciful sets and lots of audience participation. Baskets of popcorn adorn every table and food is available from Anthony’s next door. Ticket prices for adults are $18.50 with discounts available for season ticket holders, seniors, students and the military.
Shows can be seen year round, but you’d better reserve your seats in advance as shows book up quickly.
In addition, the Gaslight Theatre offers costume rentals for those of you looking to dress up for a special occasion.
For a casual, fun night of entertainment the Gaslight Theatre is a must.
