Fantasy Island Update
This article authored by: Catherine Hallberg
For those of you unfamiliar with this popular biking trail, Fantasy Island is located at the intersection of Harrison and Irvington Roads in Southeast Tucson. It’s on about 3 square miles of State Trust Land, , but the actual trails comprise about 18 miles. The area runs between Irvington and Valencia and is easily recognizable at Irvington where you’ll see lots of bikes and cars.
All the trails are one-way with the exception of the newly paved path which features 2-way lanes which are well-marked and roomy. The rest of the trails are dirt and loop around. They go by colorful monikers such as Christmas Loop, Bunny Loop, Dead Cow Loop, the Shaft and the main one, Cactus Loop.
I’m no longer able to bike, but do enjoy a scenic walk, so yesterday decided to take advantage of the sunshine and strike out on the new paved trail. Apparently a lot of other folks had the same idea, as many bikers passed me along the way. Located in the middle of unobstructed natural desert, you can really enjoy the mountain views and assorted cacti. It’s a straight path, so your view is pretty much panoramic.
In my mind, it was about 1.5 miles between Irvington and Valencia. After 40 minutes had passed without being able to spot Valencia, I realized I’d misjudged the distance and headed back towards Irvington. It was a good thing, as when I drove the distance it was 2.7miles. My fun walk would have turned into a trek had I reached Valencia and had to make the return trip.
Bikers really enjoy Fantasy Island as the numerous loops provide different levels of difficulty and distance. If you are a biker or a walker, this is a route worth checking out. Pedestrians should stick to the paved road as the dirt paths are narrow and one way. You can strike out across the open desert, but I’m not that adventurous.
When the temperature is right, get outside and soak up some of the clean air and Tucson sunshine. It’s a great way to work off those holiday dinners!
