Esmond Station Regional Park

I attended an open house in late May whose purpose was to unveil the proposed Master Plan for the Esmond Station Regional Park which will be located near the intersection of Houghton Road and Mary Ann Cleveland Way, adjacent to Empire High School.
This 274 acre park site will be constructed near the original Esmond Station railroad stop of the old Southern Pacific Railroad line. You may have heard about this stop as a tragic wreck occurred in 1903 which left 22 dead and 45 injured . Remains of the rail bed and various structures still remain and will be included in the park. This project is very exciting for the residents of Vail as the plans include family recreation areas with playgrounds and picnic facilities, tennis courts, baseball and softball fields, dog parks, fitness trails, Farmer’s Market and Event Plaza, an aquatic center, splash pad and even a library! As you might expect, the project will take a while to complete, and most likely the areas which require the least maintenance will be constructed first. For those of you eagerly anticipating the aquatics center, its completion may not be for 10 years.
However, you can write http://webcms.pima.gov/cms/One.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=71709 ,express your viewpoint and perhaps they will re-arrange the schedule. I’ve also included some maps for you to view. Projects like this one will really enhance the Vail community and help to make it a popular destination.
