El Tour De Tucson: A Tucson Tradition Since 1983
This article authored by: Catherine Hallberg
With its abundant sunshine and miles of biking trails, Tucson is a natural choice for people who love to race and ride their bicycles. If you’re a cyclist, you probably already know about El Tour De Tucson, an annual cycling event that attracts novice, advanced, and professional riders alike. Even if you haven’t pulled the bike out of your garage in a few years, El Tour De Tucson is a great time for all skill levels: even children as young as 4 have finished the race!
El Tour De Tucson: Past and Present
El Tour De Tucson was created in 1983 by Richard DeBernardis, who currently serves as the Perimeter Bicycling Association of America president. It is held the Saturday before Thanksgiving every year, and although that may be a snowy or rainy time of year in most parts of the country, it certainly isn’t in Tucson. Since the first race was held over 30 years ago, the fun times and memorable moments have grown the event into a well known race featuring nearly 10,000 participants.
Charities Love the Tour Too
Cyclists participating in El Tour de Tucson cyclists raise funds for numerous charities. Tu Nidito Children & Family Services received $200,000 in the 2008 race alone. Other charities that have benefitted from the event include: The American Parkinson’s Disease Association, Water For People, the Ben’s Bells Project, Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and more.
What Makes Tucson Such a Great Town for Cycling?
El Tour De Tucson has created a lot of visibility for Tucson in the cycling world, and the reason is simple: Tucson’s weather is perfect for cycling! Tucson has been ranked as one of the top American cities for cyclists, including a #1 ranking by several publications including Outside’s “Top 10 Best Bike Towns” list from May 2012 and the Atlantic’s list of cities with the “Most Bikeable Neighborhoods” in May of 2013.
If you’re a cycling fan interested in moving to a town that’s perfect for you and your passion, consider Tucson Arizona.
