Colossal Cave Road Project
This article authored by: Catherine Hallberg
As Vail, AZ grows, we are experiencing increased congestion between Acacia Elementary and Old Vail Middle School on Colossal Cave Road. Pima County is in the midst of an $8 million project to widen some areas and improve visibility.
Adjustments to grade elevation are being made to improve the visibility and a two way left hand turn lane will be added at several locations. Entry to both schools will be easier with the addition of right turn lanes as well as a modified driveway entrance to Acacia Elementary.
A multi-use asphalt path is to be added on the West side of Colossal Cave and a concrete sidewalk on the East side. For bikers there will be paved shoulders along the road. Landscaping will include native plants and local youth art will decorate the seating area at the Acacia Elementary crosswalk.
Our most recent update is that the road will be temporarily closed from September 24 through October 2 for grade adjustment at Success Drive and by the railroad tracks. Though inconvenient, this road improvement project will provide some welcome respite from morning and afternoon congestion plus make taking your kids to school less stressful.
Parsons Brinckerhoff/Southern Arizona Paving are in charge of the project. Questions should be directed to Sandi J. Garrick, Project Manager. For updates: http://webcms.pima.gov/cms/One.aspx?portalId=169&pageId=59675
